This issue of Sufgirl is on the shelves now. Worth mentioning That the 12 page feature is printed on a nice uncoated paper stock.

If you were wondering who shot the Beachbeat ad, and came up with the copy. Wonder no longer… Hands up, it was me. I love it when a surf brand use something other than aspirational surf action image to sell their wares. One of my favourite surf ads was by Oxbow. It had Laird ‘I own the Sea and I am brave’ Hamilton, standing in-front of a Dam holding a surfboard with a dynamite plunger in his hand… ready to blow the dam and ride the massive torrent. Wowsers.

As soon as the deviant/pro surfer/Beachbeat surfboard technician, Shaun ‘Skippy’ Skilton heard his employers were using this portrait in an ad, he shaved his hair off to avoid recognition. Not sure why, this is a claimer if ever I’ve seen one.

I was down stairs in the studio’s cafe ordering coffee, and noticed a piano had been dismantled. 1 hour later, I had made this (procrastinating again).

Brief: 10 page fashion editorial featuring top surf brands. Keep it surfy.

Location: Zeds Surfing Adventures, Barbados http://www.barbadossurfholidays.com/

I was lucky enough to have a very capable model, who despite being a girly girl, didn’t mind having a go at surfing. Being a surfer myself (so cool), I knew what a long shot getting a complete novice to paddle in to, stand-up on, and line up with the camera was. Nina owned the whole series, as you can see. My favorite is the timeless pose, with the hairband and the Billabong bikini second from the end. Let me know you thoughts on which one works for you – use the comments box below. Nike/Footlocker Retail Campaign

Here’s an insight into the process of creating an advertising image to brief. I’ve included the concept sketch, brief, final reworked ad, and the unedited selection I submitted to the client.

This was shot in May 2009 and will be rolled out across 500 European stores this month.

Client: Nike + Footlocker

Agency: Nitro - nitrogroup.com

Model: Pip Andersen PIPTRIX

Brief: “Create dramatic, striking visuals showing young sneaker enthusiasts enjoying some Air time – time dedicated to their Air Max 90s. Our model will be presented wearing the new Air Max 90s against a bright summer sky, highlighting the bright white and orange colourway of the new shoes.
Shot on location. We want to keep things rougher around the edges, keeping everything in camera ideally, with the minimum amount of retouching. Everything will be in an urban location, with downtown scenery in the background.
However, the sky will be dominant blue, no doubt with the occasional cloud, but nothing to detract from our model. The shoe and the shirt will be the focus, the white standing out boldly against the sky. The sun is bright and summery and will provide strong light that will make the overall shot even more dramatic.”
