Katie & Matt

Place House, St Mawes, Cornwall

Documentary wedding photography · St Mawes · Summer

Matt runs into burning buildings for a living; Katie designs the rooms people live in. Nerve, and an eye. Both were at work at Place House, where the lawn runs down to the creek and the day began with boats in St Mawes harbour.

I don't work from a shot list. I read the day as it happens — where people stand, how the estate frames them, which sixtieth of a second in a running minute holds the whole thing — and I ask for almost nothing. The frames below are in the order they happened. That order is the argument.

Photographing Place House, St Mawes

Place House gives a photographer three gifts: water, lawn, and evening light. The morning starts across the harbour in St Mawes; the day itself plays out on the long lawn between the house and the creek, where the marquee catches the light coming off the water.

By evening the sun drops straight down the channel — the lanes go gold, the boats come out, and the last frames of the night are lit by festoon bulbs and whatever the sky has left. If you are marrying here, give the evening an hour of your time. The light pays it back.

The day as it happened. Framed as it deserved.
